x-mas is taking out the name of christ.

yeah, i know religion isnt a hot spot anymore really, but even if you arent religious or spiritual and still celebrating christmas, its kinda fucked up to take christ out of it. and its become so common, people dont even realize thats what i means. i didnt even realize it at first.

i will always spell it christmas, x-mas is just fucked up.

I don't know if it's me just being picky, but I hate it when people write Xmas on cards, in shop windows, and even on this site!
I am not overly religious, but people are "X-ing" out the true meaning of this time of year.
With all the hot debates about peoples different religions and views, thing like this massive Christian celebration really does p*ss me off.

I am honestly not trying to offend you - but I think you are being picky.

Your life must be either pretty great or pretty awful to care so much about sometihing so trivial.

But I guess we all have our 'pet peeves'.

Merry X, er, Christmas.

:D

No offence taken, but I don't think I am being picky!
I just feel that with the "text generation" will never know it is called Christmas - it will just be a thing of the past, and like mentioned earlier in this thread, proper written English is a rare thing these days!

PS, My life isn't great, but it isn't awful either! ;)

I use Christmas in my handwritings, but I usually type Xmas or X-mas (not in greetings and wishes). I strongly dislike typing so I am always glad to drop some letters if it is within the rules of standardised spelling. On the other hand, I mostly avoid using any abbreviations if/when I write in my own hand.

X has been used from the start of Christianity , it's not a letter X it's the Greek letter Chi which is the same shape. A very common symbol in churches is the Chi/Rho one which begins to spell the name Christ.

The X shape also represents the Cross.

I fully agree about the use of text messaging language in everyday writing. It's lazy and disrespectful to the reader.
Fortunately it's BANNED in Freeones.

This person is exactly right. X doesn't "x" out Christ; it stands for Christ. In koine Greek, "Christ" looks like this xpistos which transliterates into Christos (the p looking letter is "r"). There were three types of Roman crosses used for persecution. The one you typically see is the one thought to be used. However, one form of cross looked like an X. The other looked like a capital T. The typical one you see is the believed version used because the Gospels say that a message was posted above his head...which means the other type was need to hammer the message up.

Personally, I'd rather it be spelled out, but it doesn't typically bother me.

I use both, so I couldn't vote as there was no 'both' option. Christmas/X-mas Ape will be disappointed. He takes polls very seriously.

I've seen this kind of information before. It's good stuff.

All the same, I still use Christian just because the old relatively respectful meaning of the abbreviation is not relevant in our society. It's out moded. Now, writing out the full name "Christmas" is simply the respectful way of doing things, just the same as including someone's title or rank or whathaveyou.

Now, I don't care if someone writes Xmas. But, I know they likely ain't Greek, or 1500 years old.

The wikipage on this topic is pretty interesting.
